Senior Director of Software Systems, Advanced Engineering. As a member of Advanced Engineering I was responsible for defining and deploying new interactive services and features on the Time Warner Platform. I played a key role in rolling out VOD, and other interactive applications. This included the definition and maintenance of the overall system software architecture, as well as driving vendors to implementation of specified features and enhancements. Systems included: the BMS (Business Management System), AMS (Asset and Content Management Systems), VOD/Video Server, Client Application Server (including STB resident client applications), Conditional Access Systems (SA DNCS, and GI/Motorola DAC), Network Management and Operations Systems. Interfaces and protocols included: ISA, SSP, LSCP, CBI, MSA, ADI, and BOSS/BAS among others.
  • Coordinated, authored, and drove vendor implementation of multiple versions of the specifications listed.
  • Managed and coordinated multiple vendors in implementing complex systems on time and to specification.
  • Justified and managed a multi-million dollar annual budget for vendor development of features/enhancements.
  • Primary representation of Time Warner for next generation architecture at CableLabs and NGNA.

Independent Consultant to CableLabs. Working closely with major cable operators and vendors, CableLabs defines and promotes industry standards, and certifies compliance. Working with Comcast, Time Warner Cable, Cox, and other MSO’s, I was responsible for driving industry consensus in the development of a back office interfaces. The result of this effort was a consensus requirements document and prototype web services API.
  • Performed initial feasibility analysis, including operator consensus and coordination.
  • Drove requirements process resulting in an agreed to requirements specification.
  • Designed and authored initial web-services API specification.

Director, Systems Analysis, ExciteAtHome was the worlds largest Broadband Internet Service Provider. The Systems Analysis team works closely with constituent users including MSO’s, vendors, and in-house customers, as well as the @Home development community defining features, capabilities, and architecture.
  • Designed, and authored platform and interfaces for retailer integration.
  • Designed and authored architecture and extensions to support set-top provisioning.

WebTV, MountainView, CA

Group Program Manager, WebTV, a subsidiary of Microsoft, provides World Wide Web and email access to subscribers using television. In entering the Cable TV arena, integration, consolidation, and extension of services offered by WebTV with those of CATV platform providers was necessary to supply the subscriber a compelling service.
  • Designed and specified COM based extensions to WebTV extensions for CATV.
  • Made presentations to Multiple Systems Operators and potential partners.

 
Americast, Los Angeles, CA

Lead Systems Engineer. Americast was a partnership which included Walt Disney, Bell South, Ameritech, Southern Bell Corporation, and Southern New England Telephone Company delivering Near Video On Demand over MMDS and HFC broadband architectures. Responsibilities included developing a data model for Walt Disney’s unique program guide. Also responsible for vendor management in multi-platform multi-vendor target environment. Vendors included: Zenith, Nagra, Divicom, Lysis, Scientific Atlanta, IMake, CSG, CableData, and others.
  • Designed and specified data model and systems for unique DVB compliant guide data.
  • Authored billing and control interface for managing subscribers and services.
  • Drove MSO's to an agreed upon requirements specification.

 
Teledyne, Zenith (Consultant), Galena, IL
Nov 95 - Dec 96
Independent Consultant to Teledyne Electronics and Zenith Electronics. Consulting to Zenith I developed several specifications for systems which were ultimately developed and deployed. Consulting to Teledyne I provided guidance for applying their secure scrambling technology in a consumer oriented market. I was primarily responsible for the design of their conditional access system.
